Why Texas Dancers Need More Opportunities - And How BOOT Dance Project is Filling the Gap
There is no shortage of outstanding dancers in Texas, yet many face significant barriers in pursuing sustainable careers. With fewer professional dance companies, limited funding, and a lack of paid performance opportunities, dancers often feel pressure to relocate to cities like New York or Los Angeles. But what if the infrastructure existed to support them here in Texas?
The State of Dance in Texas
The disparity in professional dance opportunities between Texas and major hubs like New York City is striking. According to Cause IQ, Texas has approximately 270 dance organizations, employing around 279 people and generating over $24 million in annual revenue. In contrast, the greater New York City area has over 468 dance organizations, employing over 3,100 individuals and generating more than $142 million in annual revenue. New York City alone has more professional dance companies than the entire state of Texas. This difference underscores the need for stronger infrastructure and support for Texas dance artists.
According to the 2025 State of the Arts Report by the Texas Cultural Trust:
The Arts and Culture Industry in Texas has grown by 63% over the past decade, generating 7.3 billion for the state’s economy.
The creative sector employs over 900,000 Texans, with dance and performing arts playing a key role in cultural tourism and economic growth.
Tourism related to the arts and culture generated over 5.59 billion in taxable sales in Texas, proving that dance and the performing arts contribute significantly to the state’s economy.
Yet, even with with this economic impact, many dancers still struggle to access consistent funding and professional dance opportunities. The demand for dance is here - Texas simply needs stronger support systems to match it.
